The cubera snapper has dark red eyes, thick lips, and a rounded anal fin. Most young fish and some adults have irregular pale bands on the upper body. The head, body, and fins of the cubera snapper are silver or steely gray to dark brown with an occasional reddish tinge the body is darker above than below, sometimes with a purplish sheen. The largest of all the snappers, the cubera is a hard-fighting gamefish as well as a fine food fish, although larger specimens may have coarse meat. Snapper have a moderately large mouth and their dorsal fin is continuous or slightly notched. Also, the rear end of the upper jaw slides under the suborbital rim instead of outside it. Some larger-growing species may be confused with grouper however, they can be readily distinguished from this fish by one or two large canine teeth at the front of the upper jaw. They seldom inhabit estuaries and are generally demersal. Likewise they range by species from shallow nearshore and inshore waters to deeper shelf environs. Most are schooling species, although sizes vary widely. These fish inhabit tropical or subtropical waters in the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific oceans.
